The grace of a swan girl’s neck. The slime glistening on the back of a toad, the flicker of a ghostly hand. A glimpse of ruffled skirt as the princess flees at midnight. Picture book images like a feast for the senses.
Fairy tales have always been about immediacy, the present tense. “Once upon a time,” referring not to the past but to always. Events are constantly in motion, often impossible things happen with no explanation. To hear a fairy tale and to tell one is to accept the universal power of the unknown. So follow your own dream logic, the trail of breadcrumbs on the path into the forest. Lead us somewhere dark, strange and beautiful.
Beyond the Breadcrumbs is Winter Tangerine’s Fall 2017 Spitfire series. We don’t want clinical dissections of the stories we grew up knowing, picked apart to unveil archetypes, gutted of their magic. Instead we want re-tellings or new works that echo their timeless spirit.
During these dark days in our history, we deserve a respite, an escape if only for a moment from the endless barrage of headlines and constantly updating news feeds. We need fantasy stories to give us the strength to face daily reality.
