What excites me in poetry? So difficult to answer as it all remains so mysterious to me. Poems that have changed the writer in some real way--small or big, quiet or loud. Prayers, commitments, questions, buttons, scraps of red, stones. Image-based poems. Poems that sing. Poems that wrestle and risk. Poems that incorporate research. Poems of a soul. Poems that are, ultimately (and in their ways), love poems toward something.
Aracelis Girmay made the collage-based picture book changing, changing, and the poetry collections Teeth and Kingdom Animalia. She is also the author of the forthcoming book the black maria (April 2016). Girmay is on the faculty of Hampshire College's School for Interdisciplinary Arts and Drew University's MFA in Poetry and Translation.
